Ukraine attacks military targets there almost on a daily basis. Overall, the Ukrainian counteroffensive is progressing slowly. Russia's president Vladimir Putin has vowed to crush what he called an armed mutiny in a televised address. It comes after Yevgeny Prigojhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group said he wanted to oust Russia's military leadership. The Russian army says it is carrying out 'combat measures' in the southern region of Voronezh. Further south, Prigozhin says his Wagner forces have taken control of key military sites in the city of Rostov-on-Don. This includes the region's military headquarters - a key logistical base for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Prigozhin denies he's staging a coup. As Russian authorities declare a counter-terrorist operation in Moscow, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin says his troops are prepared to die for their cause. The Baltic Sea was thrust into the center of geopolitics after Russia’s invasion into Ukraine. Feeling the threat from Russia, Finland joined NATO and Sweden is on the path to be next. That would put the Baltic Sea almost entirely under NATO control. How did this Baltic frontline look in the past? The fact that the Cold War could have turned hot right here, started to fade from public consciousness after 1990. But Moscow’s aggression in February 2022 presented a stark reminder. Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine sent shock waves across the Baltic region. Finland is now a member of NATO, and Sweden is in the process of accession. This would turn the Baltic into NATO’s "inland sea,” in complete defiance of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s imperial aspirations. Russian troops and Western forces are locked in constant power plays in the Baltic Sea. While Finland has been a NATO member since April 2023, Sweden's membership has been held up by Turkey. Estonia's government, meanwhile, is urging action. After all, people in the Baltic states are all too familiar with the looming dangers, having lived for decades under Soviet occupation. On Russia’s Navy Day in 2022, Putin renewed the country’s claim to global naval dominance. Russia's fleet-building program, however, appears to be stalling in the wake of the costly attack on Ukraine. But a weakened standing does not make a regime any less dangerous. Experts are not ruling out the possibility that Russia will use nuclear weapons. And here too, the Baltic Sea takes center stage. This documentary invites viewers on an image-rich journey to scenes from this conflict. High-ranking political and military officials as well as leading experts illustrate the volatility of the Baltic Sea. In the end, there’s a prediction as to which side between Kiel and St. Petersburg will have the upper hand - the East or the West. The film examines present dangers and the consequences that could very well follow. #documentary #dwdocumentary #NATO DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The Ukrainian military says it has broken through Russian defense lines in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, as its counteroffensive continues. Officials say the breakthrough took place near the village of Verbove - with troops advancing through a crucial defensive front. The extent of Kyiv's gains are still unclear, however, as Moscow's forces are heavily fortified in the area. Ukraine's counteroffensive has been slowed by extensive layers of Russian minefields, anti-vehicle defenses and fighting positions. Heavy fighting is raging around the ruined city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. A senior Ukrainian official has confirmed that the objective is to pin Russian forces there and prevent them from being redeployed to other areas, such as southern Ukraine. Distrust in Russia's military command has become a major headache in its war on Ukraine. Ultra-nationalists have criticised the Ministry of Defense, claming that generals are judged more for loyalty than performance on the battlefield. Recently a number of high-level generals have been fired - or worse. A prominent hard-liner who accused the Kremlin of weakness and indecision has also been detained, suggesting infighting over the conduct of the war. While the top brass stuggles to keep things together, the lower ranks of the Russian military are also plagued with morale issues. Russian military courts have reported more than a thousand cases of desertion, and western observers say soldiers fleeing military service is on the rise. Two of those men told DW why they decided go AWOL and flee Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked commanders and soldiers from the Wagner Group private military company during an address to the nation Monday. He thanked Russians for their "endurance, unity and patriotism," adding that most of Wagner's forces were "patriots." However, he warned that any attempt of blackmail or unrest in Russia was "doomed to fail. From the start of the events, on my order steps were taken to avoid large-scale bloodshed," the Russian leader said. "It was precisely this fratricide that Russia's enemies wanted: both the neo-Nazis in Kyiv and their Western patrons, and all sorts of national traitors," Putin said. The Russian leader has often falsely labeled the Ukrainian government of being overrun by Nazis, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish. "They wanted Russian soldiers to kill each other," Putin added in his address. Wagner troops can return to their families or go to Belarus Putin gave the Wagner forces involved in the push towards Moscow late last week the options of joining the military, relocating to Belarus, or simply returning to their families. "I thank those soldiers and commanders of the Wagner group who did not go to the fratricidal war, they stopped at the line," Putin said. "You will be able to conclude a contract with the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, return to your families or go to Belarus. I will keep my word," he said. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko was also expected to make a statement later on Monday, a source close to him said, in which he would "answer everything, very soon." Putin's address to the nation was brief, as he went into a meeting with defense and security officials following the speech. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news outlets that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov, and National Guard head Viktor Zolotov were at the meeting. The head of the Wagner Mercenary group has called off an armed uprising in Russia. The city of Rostov-on-Don near the Russian border with Ukraine went through a turbulent day. Wagner's forces arrived there early on Saturday, securing control of key military positions. Since big Western brands like McDonald’s pulled out of Russia, an array of copycat companies have replaced them. So how do Russians feel about these look-alike newcomers? How are these companies able to copy the brands they replaced so closely? According to sensitive Russian documents obtained by a European intelligence agency, the Kremlin is trying to engineer German public opinion and German election results to be sympathetic to Russia and hostile to Ukraine and its Western allies. The documents reportedly reveal how Kremlin officials are working to bring together two unlikely bedfellows, Germany's far-right party known as the AfD and Germany's extreme left party, known as the Linke. The Washington Post has reviewed this trove of Russian documents, and conducted interviews with people close to both political parties. The Post reports that he documents record meetings between Kremlin officials and Russian political strategists, and the Kremlin's orders for the strategists to focus on Germany to build antiwar sentiment in Europe and dampen support for Ukraine. The Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol says the Crimean Peninsula has been the target of fresh missile strikes. He reported air defense systems have intercepted rockets. A day earlier, Ukraine's military struck the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Online footage shows the moment of the attack. Russia says its air defense systems shot down five incoming missiles and one serviceman is missing. Kyiv says several senior Russian navy commanders were killed in the strike and dozens more injured. Meanwhile US media reports suggest Washington plans to send long-range missiles to Ukraine. It's claimed Kyiv will get the Army Tactical Missile System - or ATACMS missiles - that have a range of up to 300 kilometers. Ukraine has repeatedly asked for the weapons. The rockets would enable Kyiv to strike targets far behind the frontlines in Russian occupied territory. The citizens of the provincial Russian town of Yelnya cling to their heroic Soviet past. It was here where the Red Army pushed back Hitler’s troops for the first time in 1941. This documentary from 2019 shows the continued pride in the military that is encouraged from early childhood. Before the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, parts of the Russian army were concentrated in Yelnya. But even before that, the place was closely linked with the military. For years, annual rituals commemorating the "Great Patriotic War" have been held. Yelnya has remained economically marginalized ever since the Soviet Union collapsed and young people here have few prospects. Children in Yelnya are raised to become good patriots. Starting at kindergarten age, they march to songs whose meaning they can hardly grasp. In his documentary, Dmitry Bogolyubov explores how in recent years, the memory of the war victims has been increasingly overshadowed by all-encompassing militarization of society and anti-Western slogans. Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld from the Yale School of Management joins us to discuss whether India and China are keeping the Russian economy alive and whether their support is enough to counter the blow of Western sanctions. Professor Sonnenfeld argues that the outlook for the Russian economy is far poorer than predictions from the International Monetary Fund suggest and that Russian oil exports are not boosting the economy because they are being sold at such a discounted price. DW asked the IMF for its response to this interview. An IMF spokesperson issued the following statement: “The IMF's GDP forecasts for Russia are based on a comprehensive analysis of official data as well as a wide range of third-party data sources, including trade data from Russia's trading partners. Although we anticipate Russia's growth at 0.7 percent in 2023, we expect fiscal and external pressures to emerge later this year. We also expect the Russian economy to lag behind in the medium-term. Specifically, we now project that the size of Russia's economy will be about 7 percent smaller in 2027 than in our pre-war forecasts. Moreover, our projections are aligned with those of other international organizations and private sector institutions, most of whom have recently revised their short-term economic forecasts upwards. They, like us, also expect lower output prospects in the medium term than was the case before the war. Our projections for Russia, as with those for other members, are founded on a rigorous analysis of official and third-party data. Our work is based on facts. In addition to Mr. Sonnenfeld’s misconceptions about the IMF’s economic forecasts, his assertions contain regrettable basic factual errors.” Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Twitch: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍 #Russia #Economy #JeffreySonnenfeld

Ukraine says Russia has launched a massive aerial assault on the country. From Saturday evening into Sunday morning, Kyiv says its air defenses destroyed 30 out of 40 cruise missiles as well as dozens of Iranian-made drones. Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy said an earlier Russian strike hit a blood transfusion center in the eastern Kharkiv region late on Saturday. He shared this photo of the destroyed facility in the town of Kupiansk, saying people had been killed and injured, without giving the number of victims. The strike came after a Russian oil tanker was hit by a seaborne drone in the black sea. Ukrainian media published video of the attack, although Kyiv has not yet publicly claimed responsibility. Russia's sea rescue agency said no one was injured in the strike and no fuel leaked out. In a speech from Red Square to mark Victory Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the world is again at a "turning point." "Today, civilization is again at a decisive turning point. A real war has been unleashed against our Motherland," he said during a parade in Moscow on Tuesday. "The West forgot who defeated the Nazis," he said before going on to repeat his false suggestion that Ukraine is similar to Nazi Germany. The Russian leader still refers to the war in Ukraine as a "special military operation" saying, "the future of our country depends on it." He said "Western globalist elites" were sowing Russophobia and aggressive nationalism, while the Ukrainian people had become "hostages to a state coup" and to the ambitions of the West. Putin insisted that the West's "untamed ambitions, arrogance and impunity" are to blame for the conflict he started when Russia invaded its neighbor over 14 months ago. Scaled-down celebrations Russia's celebration of the anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II is overshadowed by Russian battlefield failures in Ukraine, growing tensions with the West and tighter security for the Kremlin at home. Dubbed Victory Day, this is one of the biggest national holidays in Russia where people commemorate the sacrifices of the Soviet Union and over 20 million Soviet lives that were lost during World War II. The holiday comes as thousands of Russian military personnel have died since Russia invaded Ukraine in February of 2022. Putin did not address the challenges facing Russia in Ukraine but did mention some of the servicemen involved in the war attending the parade. The Kremlin is also reeling from a slew of drone attacks, including one last week that allegedly was meant to assassinate Putin. An unverified video of the drone attack was circulating on social media which showed a drone blast into flames as it hit the premises. Given the security concerns, authorities have scaled back the annual parade to exclude the traditional flyover and the "Immortal Regiment" processions, in which people carry portraits of relatives who fought against the Nazis. The Kremlin feared many would carry portraits of those who died in the war in Ukraine and show the extent of Russian losses in the ongoing war. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century." This documentary from 2021 shows the path Russian foreign policy has followed under Putin. [This documentary was originally released in 2021. In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.] On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with it came hope for the end of the Cold War, for independence and freedom for the former Soviet republics. But for many it also brought poverty and war. What remains of the dreams of that time? The documentary includes contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years and shows what has become of the legacy of a world power. #documentary #dwdocumentary DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. A survey commissioned by DW has revealed a spectrum of opinions and feelings Russian speakers living in Germany have about the war. The survey was carried out by the research institute Dimap. It polled people who were born in Russia or a former soviet republic, or have at least one parent of similar origin. More Russian speakers in Germany blame the Kremlin than Kyiv for the war in Ukraine. Experts say the survey shows how heterogeneous Germany's Russian-speaking diaspora is. A clear majority of those surveyed now have a more negative opinion of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Since Western countries began supplying weapons to Ukraine, Russian propaganda has tried to play down their importance in the war. This week the Russian defence ministry boasted that it had seized a large number of Western-made weapons. It's no coincidence that the Kremlin is releasing this information now – an international security summit is taking place in Moscow, and the media are being used to showcase Russia's strength even more. For more on this, we talk to Abbas Gallyamov, a political analyst and consultant who used to write speeches for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He's now a Kremlin critic, and joins us from Tel Aviv in Israel. #russia #ukraine #disinformation Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Twitch: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍
When Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine, it sent shock waves through Europe. The West expected Russia would see mass protests against the war, but these never happened. The authorities have tightened their grip on dissent. Filmmaker Demian von Osten has lived in Russia for almost five years. He’s seen how people throughout the country have become increasingly silent about politics and the war, and how freedoms have been curtailed. Since the start of the war he has been accompanying four Russians, some of whom support Vladimir Putin and his invasion of Ukraine, and others who are critical of him. The documentary is a stark illustration of how life has changed for people in Russia and how they feel about the war. #documentary #dwdocumentary #russia #russiaukrainewar DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Almost 20,000 people have left Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia in fear of Azerbaijani reprisals. Meanwhile, officials said at least 68 people were killed in a fuel depot explosion in the breakaway region. Azerbaijan's presidential foreign policy adviser on Tuesday called Armenian accusations of ethnic cleansing, "an insult to the people of Azerbaijan." In an exclusive interview with DW's Jack Parrock, President Ilham Aliyev's advisor, Hikmet Hajiyev, said that people leaving Nagorno-Karabakh "haven’t been forced" from their homes. Hajiyev, in Brussels for EU-hosted talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, said, "Azerbaijan has nothing to hide" but insisted there is, "no need for any kind of international observer mission because the realities on the ground are obvious." When pressed on whether his country was becoming a geopolitical pawn, Hajiyev concluded, "Azerbaijan was always against any kind of geopolitical competition in our region." EU diplomats hosting national security advisors from Azerbaijan and Armenia — as well as those of France and Germany — in Brussels Tuesday, urged Azerbaijan to present its plan for ensuring the protection and rights of ethnic Armenians in the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan last week recaptured the long-disputed enclave with a lightning offensive. Since then, more than 19,000 people, mostly women, children and the elderly, have fled to Armenia. "The EU stressed the need for transparency and access for international humanitarian and human rights actors and for more detail on Baku's vision for Karabakh Armenians' future in Azerbaijan," read an EU statement. Representatives said Tuesday's meeting "allowed for intense exchanges between participants on the relevance of a possible meeting of the [Azerbaijan and Armenia] leaders" at an upcoming October 5, European summit in Granada, Spain. Prior to the recapture of Nagorno-Karabakh, the EU had been involved in mediation aimed at securing a normalization of relations between the two countries. Azeri border guards on Tuesday were busy scanning the endless procession of individuals fleeing from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia in a hunt for "war criminals." More than 19,000 people have now taken the enclave's one exit route to safety. Amid warnings of possible ethnic cleansing, many of the region's ethnic Armenian population of 120,000 have decided to leave. Many of those fleeing are women, children and the elderly, who are allowed to pass into Armenia without incident. Military aged males, however, are required to be photographed as Azeri soldiers search for what they call "war criminals. Azerbaijan intends to apply an amnesty to Armenian fighters who laid down their arms in Karabakh, but those who committed war crimes during the Karabakh wars must be handed over to us," an Azerbaijani government source told AFP. Russian officials said drone strikes in Pskov damaged four military transport planes and temporarily caused the airport to suspend operations. Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks on multiple Russian regions overnight, damaging military planes and disrupting air traffic, Russian officials said on Wednesday. Drone attacks were reported in Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov and Ryazan regions as well as the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, Russian officials said. In Pskov, near the border with Estonia and Latvia, four Il-76 military transport planes were damaged. Footage shared on social media showed a large fire and smoke rising above the city of Pskov. Pskov Governor Mikhail Vedernikov said on Telegram that there were no injuries, but announced the suspension of all flights from the airport for damage assessment. "If everything is in order, the airport will resume normal operations on Thursday," he said. Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory overnight "will not go unpunished." There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials and Kyiv does not claim responsibility for specific drone strikes on Russian soil. Two people were killed and one injured in Kyiv following a Russian missile strike that led to falling debris and fires in several buildings, the local military administration said on Wednesday. "As a result of debris falling in Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv...2 people died, according to initial reports," Sergiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, wrote on Telegram. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also confirmed the casualties in a Telegram post. Klitschko said the bodies were found in a nonresidential building while several other buildings were on fire. Meanwhile, the military administration said that air defenses over Kyiv destroyed more than 20 drones and missiles, making it the "most powerful strike" on the city since spring.
