After COVID got me for the third time the week before Christmas, I was determined to start 2023 as planned, with the first 100 miler of a very ambitious race calendar. More about my running goals in another video. I had heard about a fairly new 100 miler, the Shippey 100 Mile Endurance Run, so here I was headed to Missouri for my first 100 miler in that state. I had no idea what to expect from the weekend. I had barely run the past month and my lungs had finally cleared up just a week earlier. My plan was to just keep moving no matter what. The Shippey Endurance Runs offer multiple distances and relay options ranging from 20 to 100 miles. The course consists of 5 sometimes overlapping small loops ranging from 3-5 miles arranged like pedals on a flower, which gives runners access to one of two aid stations every 3-5 miles. 100 milers do this five times with a total of nearly 17,000 feet of gain. Race temps ranged from the low 10s to low 40s, so temperature regulation would be the biggest challenge for me.

Zach Michon is a member of the Philadelphia Runner Track Club who is in hot pursuit of the sub-4 mile barrier, having run a 4:00.53 mile at the 2022 Delaware Mile Challenge, and several more low-4 attempts before then. However, Zach was always a talented athlete tracing back to his starting years in the sport, finishing his freshman year of high school with a 4:26 mile PR and continuing to improve gradually year by year. After his senior year at Robbinsville High School, Zach had run 4:13 in the 1600m and 9:27 in the 3200m, catching the attention of Coach Glavin of Saint Joseph's University who later recruited him onto the team. Turns out, Coach Glavin knew what he was doing; Zach went on to take down three school records by the time his collegiate career ended in 2021, running 8:05.62 in the indoor 3000m, 13:53.05 in the outdoor 5000m, and 16:51.23 in the outdoor 4xMile Relay. Not to mention, he was also a five-time Atlantic 10 Champion. Coming out of college, Zach joined PRTC and has been dropping some pretty insane performances ever since including a 23:38 8k for 2nd place at the 2021 Rothman 8k and of course, his 4:00.53 mile. Riding my first 100 miler of 2022.I thought I would try and include a few things I do and why I do them when setting off to do a 100 miles. The TON or 100 miles is never an easy task and definitely requires a lot more planning and respect, especially this time of year when the weather can play a huge factor. Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is a 134 mile ride starting at Champoeg State Park south of Portland and ends at Eugene, Oregon. It consists of various low traffic backroads through farmlands. It goes through Salem and Albany and has Hiker/Biker camp sites at Independence and Brownsville. Day 2 of 4 is a slightly modified version of Oregons official route and is 62 miles ending at Pioneer City Park in Brownsville. The route is mostly flat with a few steeper hills towards the beginning, with one at 9.7% grade. I had to walk the last quarter miler of that one. The Hiker/Biker campground is minimal and is in the city park so people are milling about as well as RV'ers. My ride time was about 5.5 hours at an average of 11.2mph, but I'm getting up in age (71) so don't ride as fast as I use to. Unfortunately my video card filled up after just over an hour riding and I didn't realize it till later and couldn't find my others so this video only shows some of the first part and then after I reached camp. This route takes you through the town of Jefferson where you can refill on liquids. Hope you enjoy the video, days 3, and 4 to follow.
